К марту 1940 г. на металлургическом заводе Вяртсиля (ныне Вяртсильский метизный завод в Сортавальском районе Карелии) находились несколько (не менее 9) уже списанных локомотивов VR без номеров, ожидавших разделки в металлолом. После Советско-Финской войны, паровозы остались на территории, перешедшей к СССР. В апреле 1940 этот завод стал частью лагеря Кякисальми (Кексгольмская) и эти локомотивы перешли в собственность НКВД. Паровозы были отремонтированы и позже использовались на железной дороге Сорока (Беломорск) — Обозерская длиной 353 км, постройкой которой занимался ГУЛАГ в 1940-1942 г.
