D821 Greyhound is a preserved British Rail Class 42 “Warship” diesel-hydraulic locomotive, built at Swindon Works in 1960 for Western Region express services. Withdrawn in 1972 after more than a million miles, it became Britain’s first privately preserved main-line diesel locomotive in 1973. Owned by the Diesel Traction Group, Greyhound now operates on heritage railways, especially the Severn Valley Railway.
